Jordan Basin Improvement District

Wastewater treatment is an important part of your household plumbing. As discarded water leaves your home through drains and toilets the water is collected through a complex network of sewer pipes that will all lead to a wastewater treatment facility. The current South Valley Sewer Districts flows to one of three treatment facilities, Jordan Basin Water Reclamation Facility, South Valley Water Reclamation Facility or Timpanogos Special Service District.

The District owns and operates the Jordan Basin Water Reclamation Facility. Here the wastes from homes and businesses can be cleaned to a level that is acceptable to return to natural bodies of water such as the Jordan River. For more information on how wastewater is treated, please feel free to browse this site, or contact our facility for a tour.

The Jordan Basin Water Reclamation Facility (JBWRF) began construction in 2009. Two years of planning and design preceded its construction in order to facilitate the needs of the continuous growth of the southern end of the valley. The JBWRF was designed with future needs in consideration. The facility utilizes state-of-the-art membrane technology in order to ensure the facility will maintain the ever improving standards of water quality in Utah. The GE Zenon technology allows the JBWRF to produce water that is ready for use in secondary irrigation systems. Also, we utilize Ultra Violet light as a safe means of disinfection of all the water that passes through the facility. The construction of the plant accounted for future growth, eliminating the need for costly expansion in the near future. For more information on the facility, we invite you to contact us and to browse this site for more education on wastewater treatment.

The US Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Utah require publicly owned treatment works (POTW) to implement Industrial Pretreatment Programs in compliance with the requirements of 40 CFR §403 and UAC R317-8-8. The purpose of pretreatment programs is to identify and regulate businesses and industry that have the potential to discharge wastewater containing high strength wastes, toxic chemicals, and other hazardous materials. If not adequately controlled, industrial wastewater can damage sewer system infrastructure, threaten the safety of sewer workers, interfere with wastewater treatment processes, and cause pass-through of toxic industrial pollutants to receiving waters.

The South Valley Sewer District (SVSD) has established Wastewater Rules and Regulations which govern industrial dischargers. In accordance with these Rules and Regulations, the Industrial Pretreatment Department issues industrial wastewater discharge permits, requires dischargers to meet certain wastewater discharge limitations, and inspects industries and samples their wastewater to confirm compliance with permit requirements.
